Carbohydrates are class of organic compounds that are major source of energy in humans. But there are many reasons why people try to reduce consumption of carbohydrates.

One of the main reasons is the cause of spike in blood sugar levels with more intakes of carbohydrates. Such spikes in sugar levels lead to diabetes which is one of the most common diseases people suffer by.


Carbohydrates form one of the vital nutrients for human body that helps in generating energy required for our body. But it becomes necessary that we maintain the constant level of these carbohydrates in take to avoid any bad effects on our blood sugar levels.

Unhealthy or Bad Carbohydrates

While more intakes of healthy carbohydrates in it are not recommended, there are also some bad carbohydrates that have bad effect on our health. These are the carbohydrates found in some unhealthy foods articles like oil, cheese, butter, potatoes, meat, etc. Occasional or controlled use of carbohydrates rich food does not hamper your health but often people get addicted to foods that are not healthy. The reason being carbohydrate rich foods are great in taste. Foods like fries, hot dogs, burgers, pizzas, nachos etc. are high on calories due to more carbohydrate contents and this results in weight gain as well. Thus foods rich in carbohydrates are often considered as junk food.

Carbohydrates and Diabetes

Saccharine which is the main content in sugar is also the key content in carbohydrates. Hence irregular consumption of carbohydrates results in variation of blood sugar level. And frequent variation in blood sugar level leads to type-1 diabetes which is a chronic disease. This is caused due to high level of sugar content in the blood which is caused due to heavy consumption of sugar or carbohydrate rich foods.

Type-1 diabetes is the most dangerous disease as you have to live with it your entire life. And sometimes this type of diabetes leads to other chronic diseases like Arthritis, Stroke and problem in nervous system which in severe conditions may affect the brain. Thus for a person with diabetes it is mandatory to reduce consumption of carbohydrates.

Prevention is better than cure

Due to adverse effect of uncontrolled consumption of carbohydrate rich food, it is always good to control on foods rich in carbohydrates. In order to do that, one must first learn what are good and bad carbohydrates.

There are some good carbohydrates present in some fruits, milk products, meat and vegetables. To take healthy advantage of these good carbohydrates, we must adopt a balanced diet with these foods. All carbohydrates are difficult to digest and hence a route physical exercise is necessary for body to digest these carbohydrates. It is during the digestion process that some of carbohydrates get converted into energy in our body.

Bad carbohydrates are really bad on health is consumed regularly. So, at least we must reduce consuming these foods by having them only occasionally. This helps us to reduce consumption of carbohydrates on whole.
