A Healthy Life Begins With A Low Glycemic Diet

Today, more than ever, people are risking their good health because they are making poor food choices. With the amounts of sugar and salt contents in packaged foods going through the roof, it is making the population sick. That's why understanding the low glycemic diet for optimum health is crucial. It will help to improve someone's health and possibly even extend life expectancy.

That's because it is meant to control blood sugar. When this is out of control, people become pre-diabetic, and then lead to diabetes. This condition is a chronic one, that can be debilitating. However, sugar is not the only enemy, as ingesting carbohydrates, turn into sugar within the body. So, in a way, sugar is hidden.

Of course, the body meets glucose. It is what fuels the energy to the different parts of the body, from the muscles to the brain, and everything in between. Unfortunately, because of their rapid digestion, they spike in blood sugar levels, which can be very dangerous. Therefore, anything rated as high on the GI chart should be avoided, and that means anything above 55.

Aside from diabetics, everyone needs to get a better grip on their blood sugar levels. And, eating healthier with slower digestible foods can also improve bad cholesterol, as well as reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Because the foods are digested slower, one feels fuller for longer. That makes people less likely to eat more, and that can directly help with weight loss or management.

As usual, it is highly recommended to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables eaten in the day. Legumes are also recommended, as are very products and whole grains. But, some people make the mistake of choosing good food and cooking them in the worst way possible, which is frying, rendering them unhealthy as well. Also, stay away from processed foods.

Foods with a low glycemic index are recommended, but other factors must be considered as well. Recommendations from the health experts include opting for unrefined goods, instead of those that are refined. Think dark and stay away from white, as in white bread, white sugar, and white flour. It's also important to avoid potatoes, because they too can spike blood sugar.

The key is to choose foods that are in the low to medium range on the GI. There are many charts available that will disclose this information, but generally most fruits and vegetables are on the low end. Things to watch for are the starchy foods, which are typically on the higher end.

With a low glycemic diet, one can really improve his or her healthy immensely. Although most people do not know it, or don't care to know it, what is ingested will show on the inside and on the outside. A healthier diet will, therefore, help you look better, both with weight and the skin. Don't forget to drink more water, because many of these foods are high in fiber, which require lots of water to help with digestion.
